NORMAN University of Oklahoma head women's tennis coach Audra Cohen announced Edson Ortiz as the program's new assistant coach on Monday.
“We are pleased to add an individual and coach of Edson's caliber to our program,” said Cohen. “He is humble and hardworking, and he fits the standard of our program perfectly. His competitive energy, coupled with his experience playing at Alabama, will benefit us as we transition to the SEC. He will make an immediate impact on our student-athletes, and so are we.” I am pleased that he and his wife Rebecca are moving to Norman.”
From Chihuahua, Mexico, Ortiz joins the Sooners after serving two seasons as an assistant coach for the Santa Clara men's tennis program, where he helped four players achieve all-conference honors. Prior to his stint on the Broncos staff, Ortiz worked as a coach for the Eagle-Fustar Tennis Academy in Sunnyvale, California, one of the premier tennis academies on the West Coast.
In addition to his coaching duties at Eagle-Fustar, Ortiz also spent three summers teaching at the Nike Tennis Camps, where he developed the games of children ages nine to eighteen.
Before Eagle-Fustar, Ortiz had a distinguished five-year career at the University of Alabama, where he was: a three-time All-SEC selection; a two-time SEC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year (co-Scholar-Athlete in 2020); named to the SEC spring academic honor roll four times; appeared in the 2021 NCAA singles tournament and the 2018 NCAA doubles tournament; and was a four-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete.

Ortiz received both his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and a master's degree in hospitality management from Alabama.
