SANWO-OLU LAUFT THE PARTICIPATION OF LOCAL PLAYERS IN MAIDEN WTT CONTENDER SERIES – Lagos State Government

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has expressed satisfaction over the participation of grassroots players in the first World Table Tennis (WTT) Series in Sub-Saharan Africa, which took place in Lagos.

He made the statement during the medal ceremony of the five-day groundbreaking event at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium Surulere Lagos, which concluded on Sunday.

The global tournament brought together the world's best players amid fierce competition for the coveted prizes and 400 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) ranking points for the winners.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that sports have come to stay in Lagos as the World Table Tennis Federation has identified the state as one of the cities promoting table tennis.

He said: “Over the last three days we have seen table tennis played at the highest level imaginable. We are happy that there are some young grassroots players in Nigeria who have signed up for this competition. I wish them all the very best.”

“More importantly, it is a proud moment that the crowds and fans have come out in their droves over the last three days. I also see that the organization has been extremely spectacular and I am happy with the atmosphere I see here,” he added.

As a state committed to the development of sports, the governor assured that the WTT Contender will also encourage other sports to bring world top players to Lagos and revive all the old glories in sports, not only in football but in all disciplines.

Sanwo-Olu also reiterated that the state is working diligently to renew sports facilities across the state, adding that the introduction of sports in schools is another form of engagement for school children to participate in school level competition.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso; Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu; Vice President of ITTF, Enitan Waheed Oshodi; Dr. Kweku Tandoh, Director of Event and Chief Operating Officer, ITTF-AFRIKA, was also present at the grand finale of the WTT Contender Lagos.
