Northwestern breaks ground on new football stadium
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern held a formal groundbreaking Monday for a new Ryan Field on the site of the demolished football stadium.
The new Ryan Field is part of a $480 million donation from the family of Patrick and Shirley Ryan, the largest in school history. Some of that money finances academic ventures.
The school has said the stadium would seat 35,000 people, more than 12,000 fewer than the old Ryan Field, which opened in 1926. It will have a canopy designed to focus sound and light on the field and will feature state-of-the-art technology and scoreboards. as well as concessions featuring food from local restaurants. It will also achieve Gold LEED certification.
Northwestern will play most of its home games next season at the lakeside football and lacrosse facility. A temporary structure is being built with a capacity significantly lower than the old Ryan Field and the new stadium.
The Wildcats will host Miami (Ohio) on August 31 at the lakeside venue, as well as Duke (September 6), Eastern Illinois (September 14), Indiana (October 5) and Wisconsin (October 19). They also have home games at Wrigley Field against Ohio State on Nov. 16 and Illinois on Nov. 30.
The new Ryan Field is expected to open in 2026.
