Track and Field's Neugebauer named a finalist for The Bowerman
Austin, Texas Leo Neugebauer of the Texas men's track and field program was named a finalist for The Bowerman for the second year in a row. The Bowerman presentation will take place in Orlando on December 19 during the USTFCCCA convention.
Neugebauer will be joined by Texas Tech hurdler Caleb Dean and Georgia 400-meter runner Christopher Morales Williams.
The eight-time All-American was named to the Preseason Watch List and made every update during the 2023-2024 season. Neugebauer finished his final season as a Longhorn, winning both NCAA multi-titles in incredible fashion. He broke the German national record in the heptathlon with his score of 6,347 points, breaking his own UT record and becoming the No. 4 performer in NCAA history.
His offseason was nothing short of spectacular. Neugebauer started the outdoor campaign winning his third straight Texas Relays decathlon title with a score of 8,708 points, the third-best performance in collegiate history behind his own collegiate record and Kyle Garland's score of 8,720 he set last season.
Neugebauer later completed the conference sweep in the long jump with his winning mark of 7.77m (25-6). The decathlete also added a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the discus after finishing in the top 12 with his throw of 58.46 m (191-9) at the NCAA West Prelims.
The Bowerman finalist was in rare form at the NCAA Championships after breaking his own collegiate record with a score of 8,961 points, No. 6 in world history, becoming one of only seven men to ever break 8,900 points. Along the way, Neugebauer set a collegiate record in the long jump (7.86m/25-9.50), broke the collegiate decathlon record in the shot put (17.46m/57-3.50), and matched his personal best in the high jump (2.07m/6-3.50). 9.50) and broke the discus world record as a decathlete (57.70 m/189-4).
Neugebauer's accomplishments in his senior season are endless: first Longhorn man to win consecutive NCAA outdoor event titles since Ryan Crouser in 2014, first back-to-back finalist for the Bowerman since Grant Holloway (Florida) in 2019, back to -back collegiate records at the NCAA meet, and national and regional field athlete of the year (indoor and outdoor).
Neugebauer is looking to become the first man to win The Bowerman for the Longhorns and third overall Courtney Okolo (2016), Julien Alfred (2023). He is the only finalist for the Bowerman on the men's side in Texas history.
