The Syrian Arab Republic It's probably not the first country that comes to mind when you think about it artistic gymnastics. In fact, the country has never sent a representative in the sport to the Olympics. Lais Najjar is ready to change that statistic forever.
He was recently awarded a universality quota from the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), which allowed him to compete in artistic gymnastics events on Paris 2024.
The American-born representative of the Syrian Arab Republic began his career in artistic gymnastics with an injury. His father, Maher Najjar, told The Michigan DailyHe was just freaking out at home, [and] hit his head.
He was just hyperactive, too much activity, Najjar explained. And then I said, Look, let me put him in a sport where he loses all those activities. And I chose gymnastics for him.
Lais Najjar made the right choice and quickly rose through the youth ranks. He eventually ended up in the men's gymnastics team of the University of Michiganwhere he continues to train ahead of Paris 2024.
He finished 49th in the all-around at the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool, Englandand claimed all-round gold at the 2023 Arab Sports Games in Orange, Algeria.
Supported by his parents, who serve as team doctor and team leader, Najjar hopes to give Syrians something to cheer about in Paris 2024.
Artistic Gymnastics starts on July 27 at the Bercy Arena.
