Australia names the Olympic tennis team, with Alex de Minaur making his Games debut in singles and doubles
The clay of Roland Garros will hold no fear for Alex de Minaur as he makes a swift return to Paris at the spearhead of Olympic tennis in Australia.
The world number nine, who was a quarter-finalist at the French Open this month, was named on Wednesday among a nine-man Australian contingent that will compete in Paris from July 27.
De Minaur will play both singles and doubles, his Olympic debut three years in the making after the 25-year-old was ruled out on the eve of the Tokyo Games when he contracted COVID-19.
Current world number one doubles Matt Ebden (doubles), Alexei Popyrin (singles), Chris O'Connell (singles) and Rinky Hijikata (singles) will also make their debuts, while the fit-again Ajla Tomljanovic (singles), Ellen Perez (doubles) and Daria Saville (doubles) will play in their second Olympic Games.
Doubles specialist John Peers will partner Ebden at his third Olympic Games as the pair hope to emulate Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde's 1996 triumph in the country's only tennis title.
Three-time Olympian Lleyton Hewitt will captain the men's team, while Australia's only five-time tennis Olympian Sam Stosur will lead the women's team in Paris.
Jordan Thompson, Australia's number two in singles and number 39 in the world, decided to skip the Games and instead defend his ranking points on the ATP Tour.
Max Purcell, who played singles for Australia at the Tokyo Games, could have secured a spot in doubles but has also withdrawn as he tries to improve his singles ranking of No. 94.
The French Open venue will be only the second Olympic event on clay and the first since the 1992 Barcelona Games.
“I've always wanted to be an Olympian,” De Minaur said ahead of his Wimbledon campaign on Monday.
“Last time I was a bit unlucky not to be able to play in Tokyo, but I have my sights set on Paris and I am super excited to be officially part of this team now.
“I'm really looking forward to immersing myself in what it means to be an Olympian.
“I'm excited to watch all the other sports, meet some of my fellow athletes and teammates and make some new Australian friends.”
Tomljanovic indicated her recent injury could be behind her as she defeated four top-60 opponents en route to a first tour-level singles final in more than five years on grass in Birmingham last week.
“I feel good, every match I have under my belt brings me closer to the level of play I want to reach,” said the former world number 32.
“Physically I'm performing well after matches, which is the most important thing. So I'm very happy with my health. I think the more time I get on court, the better I will be for Paris.”
