“I want to create the maximum number of disruptions” – Sreeja Akula at the Paris Olympics
New Delhi: Sreeja Akula made history earlier this week by becoming the first Indian table tennis player to win a WTT Contender singles title and on Tuesday she became India's top rower with a career-high ranking of 24.
The 25-year-old will now hope to carry the momentum and cause some upsets at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Sreeja, who played a key role in India's qualification for the team event in Paris 2024, will be participating in both the team and individual events and is definitely feeling confident as she has had a positive run this year.
During an interview with Ultimate Table Tennis, Sreeja said: It is my debut Olympics but I think I am well prepared for the tournament. I just want to give my best in whatever event I play and just want to create maximum upsets.
In 2022, Sreeja teamed up with Achanta Sharath Kamal to win the mixed doubles gold in her first-ever Commonwealth Games appearance in Birmingham.
2024: A year full of highlights for Sreeja
Sreeja, who had upset world No. 2 Wang Yidi of China at the 2023 ITTF World Team Championships, started the year by winning the WTT Feeder Corpus Christi 2024 singles title in Texas in January and added two months later added another crown in Beirut.
The Hyderabad-based rower defeated rising Chinese player Ding Yijie in the singles final at the WTT Contender in Lagos and went on to win a doubles crown with compatriot Archana Kamath.
The former national champion also credited the UTT experience for her overall development, saying: UTT has been very useful for every table tennis player. I think we are getting good exposure and it really helps us in international tournaments. Sreeja had an impressive season for Dabang Delhi TTC last year.
Heading into the Olympics, Sreeja has been working extensively on her overall fitness and also her mental fitness as she wanted to be at her best before the Paris Games.
Over the past two years I have worked a lot on improving my mental strength and I think this is the first aspect where I have improved, especially in 2024. I am mentally well prepared to play against any opponent, no matter who it is is.” she said.
I have also been working a lot on my strength and fitness, especially to prevent injuries, and to improve my agility on the table. I think that made a lot of difference in my playing. I also worked a lot on my first ball attack against the push.”
“I have been trying to be more consistent in attacking that ball and I see these three aspects have brought a lot of change in my game,” Sreeja added.
Both the Indian men's and women's teams have achieved a historic qualification in the team event at the Paris Olympics. Sreeja is part of the women's team along with Manika Batra and Kamath, while the men's team consists of Sharath Kamal, Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar.
After the Olympics, Indian rowers will be seen in action along with top international stars at the Ultimate Table Tennis 2024, to be held in Chennai from August 22 to September 7.
