The Australian table tennis team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
Two-time Olympian Melissa Tapper headlines the six-member member Australian table tennis team for the Olympic Games Paris 2024The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) announced this on Thursday.
Tapper, who became the first athlete to represent Australia at both the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2016, is heading to her third Games. The selection also includes Tokyo Olympian Michelle Bromley.
Australia table tennis The squad also includes teenagers Nicholas Lum, Finn Luu and Hwan Bae, all 19, in the men's events. All three will make their debut at the Summer Games together with 37-year-old Min Hyung Jee.
At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, 34-year-old Melissa Tapper competed in the women's table tennis event with Michelle Bromley and Jian Fang Lay, but Germany eliminated them in the round of 16.
However, Tapper won a silver medal in the team event at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
I can not believe it. The goal as a kid was to qualify for the Olympics, I'm going on to my third! Tapper noted after her selection.
I always just want to play my best table tennis every time I step on the court, but if I can inspire just one young girl to get active in the sport or make a child with disabilities believe that they can be whatever they want, then is that the real achievement.
Nicholas Lum and Min Hyung Jee secured a spot on the Olympic team after winning the mixed doubles qualifying tournament in Oceania earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Melissa Tapper, Michelle Bromley, Hwan Bae and Finn Luu took the first two places in the selection trials in the women's and men's tournaments respectively. Tapper also remained undefeated at the Table Tennis Australia qualifying trials.
Jee, who is currently training with teammates Bae and Lum in the Republic of Korea, is looking forward to making her Olympic debut at the age of 37.
It's emotional and surreal, she said. It took me 28 years to qualify for the Olympics. I can't describe this feeling, I'm just so grateful that I got this chance.
The table tennis events at the 2024 Paris Olympics start on July 27 at the South Paris Arena 4 and end on August 10.
