CSUN Water Polo Quartet earns academic all-district team honors
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Four members of the CSUN Water Polo have been selected to the 2024 Academic All-District At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) on June 25.
The quartet of Dorottya Telek, Anna Pal, Shelby Hovanesian And Meghan Lopez received Academic All-District Team honors as they advanced to the national Academic All-America voting.
The 2024 Academic All-District Men's and Women's At-Large teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined achievements in competition and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program individually recognizes at-large honorees in four divisions NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Telek completed another top season in the pool for CSUN in 2024. She earned her third consecutive All-America Honorable Mention award along with All-Big West First Team honors after scoring a Big West-leading 94. goals. Telek had 124 points to go with 32 steals, 30 assists, 13 field blocks and 110 draw exclusions. During the year, Telek broke CSUN's all-time record in career goals, ultimately finishing the season at 272 career marks. Telek is studying Business Administration with an emphasis on Financial Analysis. Her Academic All-District honors are her second straight, while she has received a pair of Big West All-Academic Team nods and three ACWPC All-Academic awards.
Pal, another Budapest native, would also receive her third straight All-America Honorable Mention award this past season, while taking home her first career All-Big West Honorable Mention nod. Pal scored a career-high 65 goals, good for fourth in the Big West, while totaling 127 points and 62 assists for the team. She added 31 steals and eight field blocks in 33 games. Pal, a business law major, has won numerous academic awards at CSUN, including one CSC Academic All-District Team award, two Big West All-Academic Team awards and three ACWPC All-Academic Team awards.
Hovanesian, a native of La Crescenta, set new career highs this season with 46 assists and 32 steals, while tying her personal best in goals with 33. The senior appeared in 32 of 33 games and scored 79 total points, good for third place on the team. In 2023, Hovanesian earned ACWPC All-America Honorable Mention honors after scoring 33 goals and 29 assists. In the classroom, Hovanesian studied psychology at CSUN while receiving two ACWPC All-Academic Team honors and a Big West All-Academic Team honor in her career.
Lopez, a senior from Brea, concluded her CSUN career by moving into second place in career saves in school history with 832. Lopez played in 26 games in goal and recorded the third most saves in the Big West with 220. She posted a 10.68. goals-against average to go with nine steals and nine assists. On the academic side, Lopez received her first career CSC Academic All-District Team award this season, while previously earning three ACWPC All-Academic Team awards and two Big West All-Academic Team honors. Lopez studied kinesiology with an emphasis in sports studies at CSUN.
The Academic All-America first-, second- and third-team honorees will be announced on July 17, 2024.
