FEW RESULTS at the ongoing European Football Championship have attracted as much attention as Austria's 3-2 victory over the Netherlands on June 25. The victory meant the Austrians topped the group of death, leaving the thoroughbreds from France and Poland, as well as the men in orange, behind. They started the tournament as outsiders, but are now favorites. They have also been praised for their exuberant, attacking playing style. Austria has not reached the final stages of a major tournament for 90 years; in 1992 they even lost to the Faroe Islands (population 46,000). Like many other countries, football was introduced to Austria by English expatriates. They first founded a cricket club in Vienna (naturally), but then began playing on the grounds of Baron Rothschild’s estate. Thus was born the First Vienna Cricket and Football Club, which faced the Vienna Football Club in the country’s first official match in November 1894. (For the record, the cricketers defeated the footballers 4-0.) The game quickly caught on, and the first championship was played in the 1911–12 season. However, the relatively simple, muscular game imported from Britain underwent a dramatic transformation in Vienna, emerging as a sophisticated battle of wits that employed new, more fluid formations (the so-called Danube Whirl) and required a new breed of player. For this to happen, according to Jonathan Wilson, a historian of football tactics, the game had to be taken over by a social class that instinctively theorised and deconstructed, that was as comfortable planning in the abstract as it was reacting on the pitch, and crucially that this country did not suffer from the distrust of intellectualism that was to be found in Britain.
