ASC welcomes record investment in Olympic and Paralympic sport
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Sports Minister Anika Wells joined dozens of athletes, including Olympic legend Cate Campbell, at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra to make the announcement this morning.
The investment announced today is in addition to the $102.8 million annual grant, free support services and subsidized access to the AIS facilities that the ASC provides to national sporting organizations and elite athletes.
Together, total investments in elite sports over the next two years will amount to $489 million.
The $283 million investment will support athletes, coaches and support staff through the first two years of the four-year cycle to the LA 2028 Games and represents the largest ever Paralympic expenditure to address systemic and structural barriers to Para-athlete performance.
The additional $54.9 million in Para-sport funding, doubling existing support, will provide enhanced classification opportunities, access to suitable training environments and specialist coaching and performance support.
The historic investment also gives athletes, coaches and staff the opportunity to reach their full potential by:
- A $17.6 million investment over two years in the Direct Athlete Investment Support Grants (dAIS) program to address cost-of-living pressures.
- Additional training, wellbeing and preparation support, including access to industry-leading coaches and performance support staff.
- Access to more national and international competitions, so you can regularly compete against the best players in the world in preparation for major sporting events.
ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM said today's announcement, just weeks before the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, was a vote of confidence in Australian sport.
“Thanks to the Australian Government, our Olympians and Paralympians will go to Paris with the support of the largest-ever investment in elite sport,” Perkins said.
“Australia's elite sport is more united than ever in our shared commitment to winning well, and I'm proud that this is recognized by today's announcement.
“We particularly welcome the increased investment in Para sport, which will reduce inequality and enable our Para athletes to make the most of their talents.

Today's announcement follows the Australian Government's $249.7 million investment to revitalize the AIS campus in Canberra, creating a world-leading, high-quality sports training environment for Australian athletes and coaches for generations to come.
