John Hunt Park receives $4 million upgrade for Huntsville Tennis Center
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – The Huntsville Tennis Center will soon have more courts at John Hunt Park in Huntsville.
City officials have approved a $4.6 million contract with Chorba Contracting Corporation to build 10 hard courts with lights and renovate six hard courts to clay courts.
Officials said the project will include a small restroom pavilion to support the fields, additional parking, sidewalks, landscaping and irrigation.
Joc Simmons, director of tennis at the Huntsville Tennis Centre, said the expansion will help with the overflow.
We're excited, said Simmons. We were full of tournaments in the evening, so this helps alleviate some of our overflow. We have to send people away in the evening. This will help get everyone on the field.
Simmons also said the expansion will allow the tennis center to bring as many as 500 players to Huntsville for various tournaments.
We have been working on this project for a long time and were eager to get construction started, said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. The Tennis Center is a key part of the offering at John Hunt Park and we were excited to see this property accommodate more players.
Construction is expected to take approximately 16 months. When fully completed, the tennis center will feature 36 soft courts and 10 hard courts for local and tournament play.
