Bulldogs place 287th on SoCons academic honor roll
SPARTANBURG, SCSamford Athletics placed 287 student-athletes on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, which was released by the league on Thursday. Samford's 287 student-athletes on the team are the second-most of any Southern Conference school.
The Academic Honor Roll originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors created the award as a way to recognize the league's top student-athletes. The Academic Honor Roll consists of student-athletes who participated in collegiate sports and earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the academic year, were eligible for the entire academic year and were included on the final rosters. The award is different from the Academic All-Conference award, also announced Thursday, which is determined by cumulative GPA and involves an eligibility requirement.
Of the 287 Samford student-athletes who made the team, the football team led the way with 70 members. The women's track and field and cross country teams combined to have 37 representatives, followed by the baseball team with 29 members on the team. The football team placed 28 student-athletes on the honor roll, while the men's track and field and cross country teams combined to have 27 members on the team.
The Samford softball team had 21 members on the honor roll, while the volleyball team had 15 representatives. Men's basketball, women's basketball, men's tennis and women's tennis each had 11 members on the team. Men's golf and women's golf placed eight members on the honor roll.
A total of 71 of Samford's entries received the Commissioner's Medal for achieving a GPA of 3.80 or higher, with 32 of those achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA.
In total, there were 2,284 selections on the team. A total of 684 earned Commissioner's Medals, while 244 finished with a 4.0 GPA.
