Shyiak names Contois as assistant coach
MARQUETTE, Michigan. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team and head coach Dave Shyiak are pleased to announce the addition of former NMU hockey player and Marquette resident Andy Contois to the coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2024-25 season.
Contois, a graduate of Northern Michigan University with a degree in Finance, spent the past three seasons as associate head coach of the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League (USHL), the top junior league in the United States. In his three seasons with Youngstown, Contois helped the team to a 100-61-16-9 record and played a crucial role in guiding the Phantoms to a first Clark Cup title in the 2022-23 season.
“Andy is ready for this opportunity,” said head coach Dave Shyiak. “He is a former Marquette player who has developed into a tremendous coach and recruiter. He will be a great asset to our program and community going forward. I can't wait for Andy and his wife Taylor to return to the UP and continue the tradition of Wildcat Hockey.”

Prior to his most recent stop in Youngstown, Contois spent two seasons with the Indy Fuel of the ECHL, where the team qualified for the playoffs in both seasons and led the league in having players called up to the AHL.
Before his time in Indy, Contois spent two seasons with the Central Illinois Flying Aces of the USHL. While with the Flying Aces, Andy coached seven players who were selected in the NHL Draft and advanced another 45 players to Division I hockey.
Before his coaching career, Andy played four years for the Wildcats (2002-2005), with Shyiak serving as his coach for three of those seasons. Andy had a 10-year professional playing career after Northern, spending three seasons in North America in the AHL and ECHL and seven seasons in Europe.
