From Streak to Streak: Former player and assistant take over Galesburg football | WGIL 93.7 FM

A former Silver Streak will become interim head coach of the Galesburg football team.

District 205 has scheduled a special meeting for Monday, when school board members will consider the appointment of Shawn Hickey as interim head coach of varsity football at Galesburg Senior High School. The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday at the district office, 940 W. Fremont St.

Mindi Ritchie, assistant superintendent of Human Resources & Student Supports in District 205, tells WGIL via email: We are recommending Shawn Hickey on Monday. The district is pleased to recommend a candidate for varsity football coach who is both experienced and a native of Galesburg.

A 1996 graduate of GHS, Hickey played football and baseball for the Silver Streaks before playing baseball and graduating from Monmouth College.

Since 2000 he has been a social studies teacher at the GHS.

Hickey would replace Derrek Blackwell, who resigned on June 7. Streaks assistant coaches Matt Hawkins and Jacob Carl oversaw offseason activities during Blackwell's absence.

“I'm not passing judgment on what was done at all, but the process really put the kids in a position where they didn't have the leadership that was needed,” Hickey said.

And as a result, we started to see a drop in numbers. The process was unfair to the children as they did not know where they were going. And that bothered me.”

According to Ritchie, the district received eight applications for the interim head football position, with five candidates completing the application process.

Hickey served as the football coach at GHS from 2000 to 2011 in various roles, including assistant sophomore, head coach of the sophomore team, and defensive coordinator of the varsity team for five seasons.

For the past seven years, Hickey has served as color commentator for WGIL's radio broadcast of Silver Streaks football games.

Eric Matthews, the outgoing athletic director for District 205, previously told WGIL that he expected Galesburg to post the vacancy for a permanent head varsity football coach sometime after the 2024 season.

When asked if he would pursue the permanent position of head coach, Hickey said: “That's a good question. What is most important to me is that the numbers are going up. Second, I want to get a staff that is focused on athletes and students.

The first day that IHSA soccer teams can begin practicing is August 12th.

The Silver Streaks will open the 2024 season on August 30 in Dunlap. After the season opener at Dunlap, the Streaks will host Limestone in Week 2 and Morrison in Week 3. Morrison replaces Alleman, which does not field a team for the second straight season.
