New Bulldog freshmen Kleber and Plante were both selected in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft
The University of Minnesota Duluth men's hockey team officially added two National Hockey League draft picks to its roster for the 2024-25 season on Saturday, as both incoming freshman Adam Kleber and Max Plante were drafted in the second round.
Kleber, a 6-5 defenseman from Chaska, Minn., was selected 45th overall by the Buffalo Sabers, while Plante, a 5-11 forward and native of Hermantown, Minn., was selected just two spots later at 47th overall by the Detroit Red Wings. The duo are also just the 10th and 11th ever second-round UMD draft picks, and this fall they join incoming freshman goalie Adam Gajan, who was also selected in the second round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks with the 35th overall pick. The Bulldogs now have 11 total NHL draft picks on their roster for the upcoming season, including five in the freshman class alone.
Kleber, the most recent UMD defenseman taken in the second round of the draft since eventual Hobey Baker pick Scott Perunovich was taken by the St. Louis Blues from St. Louis in 2018, is one of three Bulldogs invited for the USA Hockey World 2024 Junior Summer Show. Kleber skated for the USHL's Lincoln Stars the past two seasons, finishing second among USHL defensemen in 2023-34 with 125 shots in 2023-24 and leading all Stars defensemen with 26 points (5g, 21a). He played just one season of high school hockey at Chaska as a sophomore, recording 17 points (4+13) in 28 games in 2021-2022.
Plante, who together with his older brother Za
m, will follow in the footsteps of their father Derek, who played hockey for the Bulldogs from 1989-93 and was a Hobey Baker finalist in 1992-93. Max also now resembles Zam and Derek, both of whom were drafted by the NHL (and where Derek also enjoyed eight seasons with four teams and one Stanley Cup victory with the Dallas Stars in 1999). Like Kleber, he is one of three current Bulldogs invited to the 2024 USA Hockey World Junior Summer Showcase, and last month he skated for the U.S. in the 2024 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship in Finland, leading his squad a silver medal helped. Plante played in the NTDP the past two seasons after helping lead Hermantown High School to a Minnesota Class A state championship in 2021-2022 as a sophomore and leading the Hawks in scoring that season.
As a program, UMD has now had 131 NHL draft picks in total.
