India have been crowned T20 World Cup champions after a thrilling victory by seven points over South Africa in a classic final at Kensington Oval on Sunday morning AEST.

Virat Kohlis 76 (59) led India to a strong 7-176 but South Africa looked set to chase down the target after Heinrich Klaasen shot 52 off 27 balls.

However, the Proteas reached 8-169 thanks to some excellent Indian bowling at the end, with Hardik Pandya winning 3-20 and Jasprit Bumrah 2-18.

Kohli had struggled throughout the tournament but the Indian superstar delivered his best innings at the perfect time with his balanced batting.

I am so proud to have scored runs for the team on the most important day. Kohli confirmed after the match that this was his last T20 for India.

Earlier, India had fallen to 3-34 in the fifth over after their captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat.

In what was a low-scoring tournament, the aggregate looked daunting for South Africa, but Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31) ensured the Proteas started promisingly before Klaasen turned the game their way in the 15th over and smashed spinner Axar Patel for 24, including two fours and two sixes.

At that point, South Africa needed 30 runs from 30 balls, with six wickets in hand.

Klaasen was taken off in the 17th over after being caught behind Pandya, before Bumrah bowled all-rounder Marco Jansen to concede just two runs in the 18th over.

South Africa needed 20 off the last 12 deliveries but the speedy Arshdeep Singh leaked just four in the penultimate over.

With 16 runs still needed to win the last over, Pandya threw a full toss to Miller, who hit the ball high and straight across the ground. However, Suryakumar Yadav took a breathtaking catch on the boundary line, threw the ball back into play, crossed the ropes and then returned to complete the catch.

Kagiso Rabada came in to score a four and Pandya showed some nerves with a wide, but the seamer kept their cool and secured silverware for India after they lost the World Cup final on home soil last year.
