Kasatkina beats Fernandez in Eastbourne to win first grass title
EASTBOURNE, England – World number 14 Daria Kasatkina captured her first title of the season after beating Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Rothesay International. Eastbourne, second at Devonshire Park last year, is Kasatkina's seventh career title and first on grass.
“It's been a year, but it feels like a few days since I was here last year,” Kasatkina said on court. In Eastbourne, she claimed victories over Wang Xinyu, Yuan Yue, Emma Raducanu and No. 7 Jasmine Paolini to secure a place in her third grass final.
Kasatkina entered Saturday's final with an 0-3 record in the Hologic WTA Tour finals this season, having reached the finals in Charleston, Abu Dhabi and Adelaide. The victory earned her first title since 2022 Granby.
“I feel like I laid down a really heavy backpack,” Kasatkina said. “Although I understand that it is a great achievement to play the fourth final of the year, you still have a very bitter feeling if you don't win.”
Kasatkina improved her record to 3-0 over Fernandez, who contested her first final on the grass court. Fernandez, ranked No. 30 in the PIF WTA rankings, came to Eastbourne after a confidence-boosting run in the quarter-finals in Birmingham. At Eastbourne, she defeated Barbora Krejcikova in the first round and ended Madison Keys' title defense in the semifinals.
But against Kasatkina's smart all-court play, Fernandez struggled to break through on Kasatkina's serve. The No. 6 seed broke serve in the first game and then saved three break points in an 11-deuce game to hang on for 4-2. She then broke Fernandez again to secure the opening set and continued the pattern in the second.
After breaking Fernandez for a 2-0 lead in the second set, Kasatkina saved four break points to consolidate her lead to 3-0. Fernandez proved her resilience to fight back and led 4-3, but failed to hold her serve until the end of the 1 hour and 50 minute match.
“The second set was a rollercoaster,” Kasatkina said. “Honestly, it didn't feel great to be up 3-0 and then down 3-4 in five minutes, 10 minutes. But I'm proud of myself for how I stayed there, how I didn't go crazy, because it was pretty easy, I was down 3-4, and I came back with new balls against the wind.
“That could be a very difficult moment, and it was a difficult moment, but I'm really happy how I overcome this situation.”
Kasatkina heads to Wimbledon with a 6-1 record on grass this season and an excellent 33-17 career record on the soft grass. She is seeded 14th and will face Zhang Shuai in the first round.
