ASU's women's flag football team hosts its first youth camp as the sport's popularity soars
PHOENIX (AZFamilie) Arizona is one of the states leading the way in the expansion of flag football, especially for girls!
Interest in flag football is booming as it has become known as a potentially safer alternative to tackle football.
ASU's brand new women's club team is preparing for its first season and on Saturday they hosted a youth camp in Mesa that was sold out.
More than 100 high school and college athletes showed up for the first camp of the ASU women's flag football team, which only became an official club team a few months ago.
We've been working hard for a year to create this club team and we wanted to provide these athletes with a unique experience, said Sierra Smith, co-founder of the ASU women's flag football team.
On Saturday, girls in grades 7 through 12 from schools across the Valley competed, performing drills and learning new skills from college coaches.
Flag football is one of the fastest growing sports today, with the help of the NFL. NFL flag is a program with more than 600,000 youth athletes across the country, 25% of whom are girls.
It wasn't until last year that it became a recognized college sport in Arizona.
I played football when I was younger and my whole family is involved in football. So it actually inspired me to do it, said Breana Saunders, a flag football player at the camp.
The popularity of flag football led to it becoming an Olympic sport for both men and women in 2028.
I want to do it because no matter how big you are, I'm a very small person, there will always be a position for you on the field no matter what, said Rhiana Gurnani, a flag football player at the camp.
Excitement is building as the ASU team looks to begin its inaugural season in January.
It's just the beginning and we're very curious to see where the sport goes. It's a popular sport now and we can't wait to see what happens at ASU, said Sophia Smith, co-founder of the ASU women's flag football team.
The hope is to make the camp an annual event. The ASU team trials are in September and they want a roster of 35 athletes.
