Indian men's hockey team finishes seventh in standings
The Indian men's hockey team finished seventh in the FIH Pro League 2023-24 after the tournament ended on Sunday.
India ended their campaign with 24 points from 16 matches, managing just five wins and six draws in the campaign. The count includes three shootout bonuses.
Three of India's five wins came in their home matches, played in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela in Odisha. Two of these were against Ireland and the other was against Spain.
The two away wins included a 5-4 victory over Rio 2016 Olympic champions Argentina in Antwerp and a 3-0 win over Germany in London.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh led India's campaign from the front, scoring the highest score for his team with 12 goals. Only Netherlands' Jip Janssen scored more than him with 15.
This was the worst finish for the Indian men's team in the FIH Pro League so far. India finished fourth in 2020-21 and 2022-23, while their best finish in the tournament was third in the 2021-22 edition.
Australia won the 2023–24 FIH Pro League title with 34 points from 16 matches and qualified for the 2026 FIH Men's World Championship.
The Indian women's hockey team also had a disappointing season, finishing eighth out of nine teams in the 2023-24 Womens FIH Pro League.
The Indian women ended their season with eight straight defeats, taking just eight points from 16 matches, with their only two wins coming on home soil against Australia and the United States of America.
The United States finished last with four points and were relegated to the FIH Hockey Nations Cup for next season.
This was India's second season in the Womens FIH Pro League, after finishing third in their debut campaign in 2022.
The Dutch women emerged victorious once again, taking their fourth title in five seasons.
