Team East falls in annual Chad football match; Dover Carberry leads
MANCHESTER – Team West, led by MVP Kyle Ashley of Newport High School, went on a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and led the rest of the game in a 24-0 shutout victory over Team East in the 12th annual CHaD New Hampshire East-West All-Star Football Game Friday at Saint Anselm College.
The real winners, however, were the patients and families of the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD), as a total of $285,000 was raised. Team East contributed approximately $36,000 to that amount. It was announced that it had been a while since either team had raised $30,000, and both teams surpassed that mark.
“It's a credit to the kids and what they were able to do and accomplish,” said Team East and Dover High School head coach Eric Cumba.
It was also revealed that 17 percent of the total fundraising came from the players. Team West has raised almost $34,000. By comparison, last year's contest raised $228,000, about $50,000 for the two teams.
“We said all week, 'do it for the kids,' and that stuck with us,” said Bryce Carberry of Dover. “I don't think we really finished it for the kids, but we did it for them and it was fun.”
Team West now leads the series 9-3.
“It was a great experience,” said Cumba, who was Team East head coach for the first time. “It's a challenge to bring together a group of kids who have never played together before, and get them moving in the right direction. The match didn't go the way we wanted, but I'm most proud of see the relationships they have built with each other and what friendships they will have from now on after this experience.”
Carberry shines in a game made especially for him
Carberry, who finished his senior season on the Division I all-state first team, called it “nothing serious” but did indicate he was actually born two months premature with CHaD.
“It's cool to have that connection with the hospital, and now I'm here playing a game today,” he said.
On Friday, he led Team East with 50 receiving yards.
“I feel like I've tried to do what I do,” Carberry said. “Catch the ball, don't get tackled, go with power, go with power. Obviously I had my teammates here, Ryder (Aubin) throwing the ball to me, (Eric) Cumba and (David) Lopez coaching the offense. It was definitely good to have my gang here with me today.”
“Bryce is a player we have worked hard for at Dover and we wanted to give him some opportunities,” Cumba said.
Carberry called it a surreal opportunity.
“It didn't end well, but it was still a fun experience,” he said. “I've made so many friends. There are so many good footballers here; even though we lost, it was a really nice experience for a good cause.”
