Sreeja Akula, Bernadette among 47 players in UTT draft for 2024 season

Rising Indian player Sreeja Akula, Romanian world number 10 Bernadette Szocs, Nigeria's Aruna Quadri and Germany's Nina Mittelham are among the top players nominated for the Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 Draft, to be held in Rotterdam on July 10.

The next edition of UTT is scheduled to take place in Chennai from August 22 to September 7.

The player draft will consist of 47 players, including eight foreign men's and women's players, and of them, 43 will be called up to the teams.

Indian stars Sharath Kamal, Manika Batra, Harmeet Desai, Manav Thakkar and G Sathiyan have already been retained by their respective franchises.

Among the Indians, world number 24 Akula, who recently claimed the WTT Contender singles title, will attract appeal.

For 29-year-old Bernadette this is her third appearance, while number 16 Quadri is ready for his fourth. Mittleham is playing in her first season.

Sharath Kamal will remain with Chennai Lions while G Sathiyan will play for Dabang Delhi TTC again.

Desai will continue to represent Goa Challengers while Thakkar will turn up for U Mumba TT. Manika will play for Bengaluru Smashers.

With Puneri Paltan failing to retain any of their players, they will be part of the opening round of the draft along with new teams Jaipur Patriots and Ahmedabad SG Pipers.

All eight teams will be in action from the second round as each franchise has to field a six-member squad comprising one foreign male and female player and two Indian male and female players, organizers said in a press release.

Other Indian players participating in the draft include Asian Games bronze medalists in doubles Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee, and in women's Yashaswini Ghorpade, Diya Chitale, Poymantee Baisya and Taneesha Kotecha.

Snehit SFR, Jeet Chandra, Manush Shah and Yashansh Malik are the other male players in the draft.

Among the foreign players in this year's draft are the silver medalists of the World Team Table Tennis Championships from France Jules Rolland and Lilian Bardet, four-time Olympian and gold medal winner at the 2015 European Championships in doubles, Joao Monteiro from Portugal, the 2019 World Championships silver medalist in doubles Alvaro Robles of Spain and world number 70 Cho Seungmin of South Korea in the men's category.

Among the female players, Thailand's Suthasini Sawettabut (WR 56), who played for last year's title winners Goa Challengers, Sakura Mori (WR 27), Lily Zhang (WR 30) and Orawan Paranang (WR 36) will be part of the draft.

This year the competition will be divided into two groups of four teams each.
