Round Rock Sports Center Expansion In Full Swing

An expansion of the Round Rock Sports Center is currently underway, with completion expected in early 2026. This development will add two new courts, bringing the total number of courts at the facility to eight.

Opened in January 2014, the Round Rock Sports Center has established itself as a premier sports and events facility. Currently, the 82,800-square-foot indoor floor plan features six basketball courts that can be converted into 12 volleyball courts.

The expansion will have a separate entrance and is designed to provide greater flexibility for operations and event management. The new courts will allow the facility to host larger and more diverse events. For example, the facility can be configured to host a 16-court volleyball tournament or separated to simultaneously host a 6-court basketball tournament and cheerleading competition.

Sports tourism in Round Rock has brought more than $162 million in economic activity to the city since the sports center opened, said Chad McKenzie, director of sports management and tourism. This expansion project will allow Round Rock to remain competitive with other communities in hosting a wide variety of events and attracting top-tier events.

The Sports Center has hosted numerous statewide and national events, including the USA Judo Senior National Championships, Texas State Taekwondo Championships, iSET College Table Tennis National Championships, USA Deaf Basketball National Tournament, and several national cheer and dance competitions. The influx of sporting event attendees supports local businesses, hotels, and restaurants, providing a steady stream of revenue and bolstering the city's reputation as the “Sports Capital of Texas.”

During the construction period, the existing Sports Centre will remain open and fully operational. Although there will be short periods where individual courts and toilets will be temporarily unavailable, these disruptions will be coordinated in advance to ensure they do not impact on scheduled events or court bookings.

In addition, in some construction phases, the available parking spaces in the southern parking lot will change or decrease. However, the eastern main parking lot will not be affected.

This project is part of the City of Round Rocks’ larger 2023 bond package, which voters approved in May 2023.
