Afghan women aim for cricket comeback as refugees
Afghan women cricketers urge ICC to set up refugee team in Australia

With the dream of wearing the Afghan jersey again at international level, 17 female cricketers from the country, who are living in self-imposed exile in Australia, wrote to the ICC to help set up a team. However, the team was disbanded after the Taliban takeover in 2021.
While the Afghan men’s team have set new standards, recently reaching the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup for the first time, the players, who were contracted to the Afghanistan Cricket Board before the Taliban takeover, have sought refuge in Australia, hoping to form a refugee team and play international cricket.
In a letter to the international governing body, the women cricketers praised the men's team's stellar performance in the T20 World Cup but lamented that they were not given opportunities to flourish.
“We, the former contract players of the Afghanistan women's team, are proud and excited about Afghanistan's performance at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and would like to congratulate Rashid Khan and his team for reaching the semi-finals,” the letter, written on June 29, read.
“It remains a deep sadness that we as women cannot represent our country like the male cricketers.”
The Afghan government has strict rules for women, for example, they are not allowed to participate in sports activities.
“As former Afghan cricketers now living abroad, we are unable to represent the Afghan women's national team. We request the ICC to assist us in setting up a refugee team in Australia,” the letter added.
The players have suggested that the team could be managed through the East Asian Cricket office, which is based at Cricket Australia. However, they acknowledged that “due to the government policy of Afghanistan and the Afghanistan Cricket Board, the ICC cannot recognise them as a national team of Afghanistan”.
“With this team we want to represent all Afghan women who dream of playing cricket but cannot do so in Afghanistan.”
The players have stated that their proposed team would be a team 'without borders' and that it would draw attention to the challenges faced by female players in Afghanistan.
“Creating a team of Afghan refugees can give us the opportunity to play, coach and manage a cricket team without borders. The creation of this team will allow all Afghan women who want to represent their country to come together under one flag,” the players said in their letter.
“Our goals with a refugee team are to develop and showcase our talent, give hope to the women still in Afghanistan, and raise awareness of the challenges women in Afghanistan face.”
