Mountaineers announce 2024 Cross Country schedule
BOONE, NC – App State Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Damion McLean announced the 2024 men's and women's cross country schedules on Monday. The Black and Gold will host three races this fall on the Don Kennedy Trails at State Farm.
“We are looking forward to an exciting season,” said Brad Herbster, men's distance coach. “Our schedule includes competitive meets here in beautiful Boone and high-level competition at Notre Dame, giving us the opportunity to evaluate where our team stands nationally. As we work toward a national level, this schedule allows us to put our best team on the line during our championship season.”
App State kicks off the season with back-to-back meets on the Don Kennedy Trails at State Farm in Boone. On Aug. 30, the Black and Gold will host the Covered Bridge Open with the women’s 5K at 10 a.m. and the men’s 6K at 10:40 a.m. On Sept. 13, App State will host the Firetower Project Run, with the men’s 8K at 6 p.m. and the women’s 6K at 6:40 p.m.
The Mountaineers head to South Bend, Ind. for Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 4, their only out-of-town meet during the regular season. Returning to Boone to close out the regular season, the Black and Gold will host the Mountaineer Feud on Oct. 18. The men's 8K is scheduled for 10 a.m., followed by the women's 6K at 10:40 a.m.
“Our women have high goals for the fall and are committed to working hard and building on the positive momentum from last year,” said Annie Richards, women’s distance coach. “All of the runners on our roster who were conference leaders in 2023 are returning, and we have several transfers and a strong incoming class that will elevate our performance in the 2024 season. I’m looking forward to opening the season in Boone and showcasing our home course and trails. During these first few races, we will emphasize racing as a team and building unity. Traveling to Notre Dame in October and competing against some of the best women from across the country will set the tone for how our women compete in a championship season.”
The Sun Belt Championships are scheduled for Nov. 1 in Foley, Alabama, where the App State men's team will defend its title. App State won the 2023 crown with 28 points, the lowest team score in the conference since 2013. In addition, Oliver Wilson-Kook, Calbert Gast, Dwayne Lilly, Garrett BivensAnd Jonah Bird earned All-SBC honors and in his first year as the men's distance coach at App State, Herbster was named SBC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. On the women's side, the Mountaineers finished fifth in the team standings and Jasmine Donohue earned All-SBC honors for her performance on the track.
The NCAA Southeast Regional will take place on November 15 in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and the NCAA Cross Country Championships are scheduled for November 23 in Madison, Wisconsin.
