Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka withdraws from Wimbledon

• Third-seeded Aryna Sabalenka withdrew from Wimbledon due to a shoulder injury when the tournament started on Monday.

Aryna Sabalenka withdrew from Wimbledon with a shoulder injury when the tournament got underway on Monday. The results overshadowed the early results, as everyone was left waiting to see if Andy Murray would consider himself fit to play.

Sabalenka, the two-time Australian Open winner, said she was “heartbroken” when she announced her withdrawal after it became clear during a training session that she was not ready.

The third-seeded woman was seen as the leading contender at the All England Club, where seven different women have won the title in the past seven years.

Ninth-seeded Maria Sakkari was among the early winners and said after her 6-3, 6-1 victory over McCartney Kessler that the women's draw is still wide open.

“We can name about 20, 25 girls who could win the tournament right now,” Sakkari said.

Seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini, last month's French Open runner-up, advanced past the first round at Wimbledon on her fourth attempt, beating Sara Sorribes Tormo 7-5, 6-3.

In the men's event, fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev defeated Aleksander Kovacevic 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, and eighth-seeded Casper Ruud defeated Alex Bolt 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4. Unseeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov eliminated ninth-seeded Nicolas Jarry 6-1, 7-5, 6-4.

Raducanu won the 2021 US Open at age 18, but she has struggled with injuries since then. Her scheduled opponent, 22nd-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova, withdrew Monday morning due to illness. Alexandrova was replaced by Renata Zarazua, a so-called “lucky loser” from the qualifying tournament.

Gauff, who won the US Open last September, closes the day in the main stadium against Caroline Dolehide in a typical American match.

Number 1 Jannik Sinner is also on the program for Monday and will play against Yannick Hanfmann on number 1 Court.
