The Cricket Regulator vs Christopher Wright

The National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP) has ruled in the Cricket Regulator's case against Christopher Wright.
On 13 October 2023, Mr Wright was notified by the Cricket Regulator that he may have committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) due to the presence of a prohibited substance in a sample taken on 2 September 2023, ostarine, and the use of the same prohibited substance. The notice further stated that he had been provisionally suspended.
On 13 December 2023, the Cricket Regulator formally issued a Notice of Charge to Mr Wright for committing ADRVs under Articles 2.1 and 2.2 of the England and Wales Cricket Board Anti-Doping Rules (ADR). The National Anti-Doping Tribunal, consisting of William Norris KC (Chair), Robert Englehart KC and Professor Dorian Haskard, was appointed to hear the case.
On 16 January 2024, Mr Wright admitted both charges and therefore the issue was for the Tribunal to determine the period of ineligibility. On 8 March 2024, Mr Wright informed the Cricket Regulator that a fruit supplement he had purchased online through Company Y had caused the Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) to occur as the supplement was contaminated with ostarine. Therefore, suggesting that the ADRVs he admitted were not intentional for the purposes of ADR Article 10.2.1(a) and ADR Article 10.2.3, he did not knowingly commit the ADRVs in accordance with ADR Article 10.4 and had No Significant Fault or Negligence.
The Tribunal found on the balance of probabilities that Mr Wright's ADRs were not intentional and that the supplement was contaminated for the purposes of ADR Article 10.6.1(b). It also found that there was a small degree of culpability on Mr Wright's part in relation to the nature of the supplement he purchased and subsequently used.
Accordingly, the Tribunal was satisfied that Mr Wright had admitted that he had committed the ADRVs in accordance with ADR Article 2.1 and Article 2.2 and that he was guilty, but in the specific circumstances of this case a period of ineligibility was imposed of 9 months. Given that Mr Wright had been subject to a provisional suspension since 19 October 2023 and there was no evidence that he had failed to comply with the provisional suspension, the 9 months period of ineligibility was set for 19 October 2023 and ending at midnight on 18 July 2024.
