Best Sports, Hockey: Noah Callender, Chartiers Valley
For the first time in 38 years, Chartiers Valley was able to receive the Penguins Cup.
Noah Callender was one of the reasons for the Colts' success.
He was only a freshman, but led the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League's Class A division with 30 goals during the regular season. He had 14 assists. His 44 points were good for fifth in the league.
Callendar was never held without a point in a game during the regular season or the playoffs. As a PIHL all-star, Callender recorded seven power plays and three shorthanded goals.
In his first start for the college team, Callendar scored two goals and collected four points.
In his final freshman game, he scored twice more, but the Colts were unable to claim the Pennsylvania Cup. Although his two goals gave Chartiers Valley a 2-0 lead, Hershey scored four unanswered goals to win the state finals, 4-2, played on March 23 at the Haverford Skatium.
The Colts posted an undefeated 17-0 regular season record before beginning their march toward the Penguins Cup. After beating Moon 4-0 and Indiana 2-1, the Colts came from behind to defeat Greensburg Salem 2-1 in overtime in the PIHL Class A final played on March 19 at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.
Chartiers Valley finished the season with an overall score of 23-1-0.
