Women's rowing to compete in Henley Royal Regatta
HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England As part of its 50th anniversary celebration as a college sport, Boston University's women's rowing program will compete in the 2024 Henley Royal Regatta, one of the sport's premier international competitions, from July 2-7 on the famed River Thames.
BU sent two crews across the pond in an 8+ and 4- for the qualifying rounds, which took place on Friday (June 28). Although the 4-crew completed the course in 7:28.4, the Terriers ultimately failed to qualify.
The 8+ boat went ahead and will race in the heats for the Island Challenge Cup from Wednesday through Friday (July 3-5). BU will be one of five U.S. colleges participating in the entry, along with Drexel, SMU, Iowa and Rhode Island.
All six days of Henley Royal Regatta will be broadcast live on the organisers YouTube page via the link above, with results available on the regatta’s official website. Further information for those attending the regatta will also be available there.
BU will be competing at Henley Royal Regatta for the first time since 2008. That year, the Varsity 8 qualified for the Remenham Cup, where they faced Osiris Boat Club in the quarter-finals. BU also made it past the qualifying round of Henley Royal Regatta in 2004. The Terriers have also competed at Henley Women's Regatta in the past 25 years, in 2008 and 1999.
The Terriers follow up a 2024 spring season that culminated in their third Patriot League championship in program history, and second in three years, as BU swept the Grand Finals in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4. The Terriers finished in 19th place as a team at the 2024 NCAA Championships, highlighted by two 18th-place finishes in the 2V8 and V4.
In his first season at the helm, women's rowing director Malcolm Doldron was named Patriot League Coach of the Year, while BU's Varsity 8 was named the conference's Boat of the Year. Anna Dechantsreiter received Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, while nine Terriers received CRCA Scholar-Athletes honors.
