Hurricane devastation: T20 World Cup champions await Barbados airport reopening

The winning Indian cricket team remains stranded in Barbados after a category 4 hurricane struck the Caribbean islands of Barbados in the early hours of Monday, delaying their return home by at least a day.
The Rohit Sharma-led team has been staying in a five-star hotel since their victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final on Saturday.
Life-threatening winds and storms were forecast to batter Barbados and nearby islands on Monday, with the country, with a population of nearly three lakh, in lockdown since Sunday night.
The main international airport is closed until further notice and water and electricity supplies have also been disrupted.
“Like you, we are also stuck here. First we have to figure out how to get the players and everyone out of here safely and then we will think about congratulating them on their arrival in India,” said BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who was here for the grand final.
The team, along with top BCCI officials including Jay Shah, were scheduled to leave for India on a charter flight on Monday but were unable to do so due to the closure of the airport. The BCCI is also trying to get the travelling Indian media out of the hurricane-hit region.
“There was a charter flight we wanted on Monday, but the airport is closed, so that option is gone. We are in contact with several charter companies, but it all depends on the airport operations. As things stand, no plane can land or take off.”
“The plan is to fly directly to India with a fuel stop in the US or Europe. We are in touch with airport officials. The airport is expected to remain closed till Tuesday afternoon. If the weather improves significantly, it may open earlier. The wind speed has to decrease for the flight operations to start. You cannot really fight with nature. We have to wait and see,” a source told PTI.
