'Spirit of Cricket' takes a major turn as Joe Root admits Jonny Bairstow's Ashes 2023 stumping was legal

A year after Jonny Bairstow's controversial campaign for the 2023 Ashes, Joe Root has admitted his true stance on the whole saga.

In the 2023 edition of the Ashes, Jonny Bairstow’s stumping in the second Test at Lords was the highlight of the historic five-match Test series. The batter had stepped out early after the delivery, prompting the keeper, Alex Carey, to enforce the stumping and the dismissal sparked debate over whether the Aussies were upholding the Spirit of Cricket.

But now England's best batsman Joe Root has given his opinion on the whole situation in the documentary series The Ashes 2023: Our Take and, to his surprise, he found that the dismissal was indeed legal.

At first I was quite angry, but when you're really into the game it's very difficult to put yourself in the other position, Root said.

“Ultimately, it's within the rules of the game. You have to be aware of it as a player. Jonny will hate me saying this, but if you stay in your crease, you can't get given out, can you?” he added.

His England teammate Moeen Ali, who came out of retirement for the Ashes series, also felt that Bairstow had a habit of leaving the field too early.

Meanwhile, Moeen said: I've always felt that Jonny leaves his goal area so early, that he leaves the ball and just runs straight through, and I've always felt that he leaves that early too, he added.

After the dismissal, England captain Ben Stokes even questioned the Australian Spirit of Cricket, a term that crops up time and again when a team is unhappy with the way a particular situation has unfolded.

If the roles were reversed, I would have put more pressure on the umpires and asked them if they had made the call and thought deeply about the whole spirit of the game and if I wanted to do something like that. For Australia, it was the moment to win the game. Would I want to win a game like that? The answer for me is no, said Ben Stokes after that rejection.

Bairstow is currently out of the Test squad after a poor performance on the India tour. England next face West Indies, starting on July 10 at the Lords Cricket Ground.
