Three Oak Ridge players win medals at Senior Olympics in table tennis
Three local table tennis players were medal winners this year Senior Olympics in Tennessee final.
Greg Hamilton, competing at Franklins Academy Park on June 24, won a bronze medal in the men's 70-74 singles and teamed with Geoff Tillett to win bronze in the 65-69 doubles, according to a press release. Blaine Stewart was a silver medalist in the men's 55-59 singles. All three have competed locally in the Oak Ridge Senior Center.
The Tennessee Senior Olympics, which began in 1981, has a mission to promote healthy lifestyles for seniors through fitness, sports and active involvement in life. Each year, thousands of seniors from across the state compete in district competitions to qualify for the state finals, the press release said. This year, nearly 90 players competed in the table tennis finals, with age groups ranging from 50 to 90.
The Oak Ridge Senior Center has an active table tennis group that meets three times a week: Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Friday from 2 to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Senior Center is located at 1407 Oak Ridge Turnpike, next to the Oak Ridge Civic Center.
