USU Makes Significant Changes to Football Program
Utah State University officials informed head football coach Blake Anderson on Tuesday of their intention to terminate his employment due to actions taken in the spring 2023 semester that violated both his employment agreement and university policy. Coach Anderson has 14 days to respond, according to his employment agreement.
This decision was made following a thorough external investigation into alleged noncompliance with the University's Title IX policy. This policy requires full and timely reporting of disclosures of sexual misconduct, including domestic violence, and prohibits employees from independently investigating disclosures of sexual misconduct.
Jerry Bovee (interim director of athletics, 2023) and Austin Albrecht, director of player development and community at Utah State Football, have also been fired.or violations of university policies regarding reporting of sexual and domestic violence and failure to meet professional responsibilities.
In accordance with Utah’s open records laws and USU policy, the University may not release any additional information until all opportunities to respond and/or appeal have been exhausted, a minimum of 14 days.
This morning, USU Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau spoke with the student-athletes and staff of the football program to inform them of these changes. She also shared that Defensive Coordinator & Defensive Ends Coach Nate Dreiling will serve as the interim head coach of the USU football program for the 2024 season.
In an email to faculty and staff this morning, President Cantwell and Sabau emphasized the importance of taking the following actions:

Today’s actions are the result of a thorough external investigation, and we believe the evidence warrants immediate action. Our job is to hold ourselves and others accountable for their behavior and ensure that, in the best interest of our students and our community, we are living up to our university’s values. While we recognize the impact of these decisions on our student-athletes and football program, we will continue to take the necessary steps to provide a respectful, transparent, and winning culture at Utah State University.”
