Tanner George Chases Hockey Dreams with Bishop Kearney Selects
Springfield is on the map for a number of reasons: Honest Abes' longtime residence, the horseshoe sandwich, the state capital. And, hockey?
No, not so much.
Tanner George might be able to change that a little bit. The 16-year-old city dweller, who just finished his sophomore year of college, Chatham-Glenwoodwill go to Rochester, New York this fall to play for the Bishop Kearney Selectsa prep school with a strong hockey tradition. If all goes well this coming season, George hopes to play for a junior team in the United States Hockey League next season and then a college team. And then? The NHL is the dream, but George isn't thinking that far ahead.
Right now I'm just excited to get to Rochester and play there, said George, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound defenseman. It's going to be a big change, but I'm ready for it.
To say that George's parents showed a lot of sacrifice and dedication to get their son this far in the hockey world is like saying that cows contribute a small amount to the production of milk and cheese.
What a dedication: For the past four years, George's parents, Shannon and Sara, have taken turns driving him to St. Louis and back, four days a week during the school year. St. Louis is where George has played competitive hockey during that time, most recently for the AAA St. Louis Blues.
George has been taking lessons regularly at Chatham Glenwood and then has been driving to St. Louis four nights a week for games and practices for the past four years. His father, Shannon, says he can now make that drive in my sleep.
He often did his homework in the car, Shannon George said. There's not a lot of hockey here, so we had to do what we had to do to give Tanner the most competitive (competition) he could get.

Tanner George began playing hockey in Springfield at the age of 4. He would win two Blue Note Cups with the Springfield Kings before moving to the St. Louis Sting, where he won another Blue Note Cup. He then moved to the Tier 1 AAA Carshield in St. Louis, where he won another Blue Note Cup. Last season, George missed half of the season with a broken leg with the Tier 1 AAA St. Louis Blues, but returned to help them go undefeated in the regular season.
What kind of game is George playing?
“I'm trying to be a two-way defenseman who can skate the puck and produce offensively,” he said. “I've got to get stronger and tougher in the corners. And I'm going to work hard on that.”
Although he has been working on his game over the past four years in St. Louis, George credits some of his early coaches with the Springfield Kings, including Ike Heimlich and Bill Shink, for his development.
Without their help I wouldn't be where I am today, George said.
Joel Herr, George's coach at Carshield, remembers a player who was never afraid to ask questions.
I think he’s going to go far, Herr said. He’s got high-end offensive skills, and with the way the game is developing, that’s what teams are looking for more of on the back end. He was an assistant captain with us and helped us win. He’s got a great attitude and works really hard. And you know what? More kids are starting to come out of Springfield. The closest place for (Tier 1, AAA) hockey is St. Louis, so they have to travel a lot. But maybe that’ll change in the future?

In the halls of Chatham Glenwood, where football, basketball, wrestling and baseball/softball reign supreme, George admits he didn’t have many friends to talk hockey with. That will change at Bishop Kearney in Rochester, where he’ll live in a dorm with his other hockey teammates.
It's going to be tough on Mom and Dad not seeing him every day, but I'm sure we'll go as often as we can, Shannon George said. The bottom line is, this is what's best for him as a hockey player, and we're really happy he's able to do this. Am I going to miss that drive back and forth to St. Louis?
(Here a few seconds).
No.
