In thrilling match, Vatican cricket team defeats St Marys University

In a match fought in the shadow of a majestic 11th century castle, the Vatican cricket team secured a hard-won victory.

On Monday, the Vatican cricket team took on St Marys University, a Catholic university in Twickenham, London.

The match was played at the spectacular Arundel cricket ground on the south coast of England. The ground is a stone's throw from Arundel Castle, parts of which date back to the 11th century, and was once home to the saint and martyr Philip Howard.

When the Vatican team arrived on the pitch after a tour of the castle, it looked like a good match. The St Marys team had been specially selected for the occasion and included a player from the England deaf cricket team.

Vatican opened the batting. They batted well and consistently, with an excellent final push taking their total to 136 for 5.

St Marys fought back immediately with an impressive opening duo that held out until the end of the tenth over.

However, once they had taken their first wicket, the Vatican bowlers were able to pile on the pressure and force an increasing number of dot balls. The match was tense until the very last over, with the British side eventually falling just five runs short, with a total of 131 for 5.

When Pope Francis recently met with Athletica Vaticana, the umbrella organization to which the Vatican cricket team belongs, he emphasized the power of sport to build bridges, break down barriers and promote peaceful relations.

This was a theme that Professor Anthony McLaran, Vice Chancellor of St. Marys University, addressed in an interview with Vatican News between innings.

The Vice Chancellor emphasised the diversity of backgrounds of the players present at the match.

We have so many people coming from different parts of the world, he said, but they have one thing in common: they love cricket and they love the church. That is something to celebrate.

Upcoming match against the king's team

The next day, the Vatican team visited the Chapel Royal King Charles, the Pope's personal place of worship, for an ecumenical service.

The visit was part of preparations for the team's next match, a clash against the Kings XI at the royal residence Windsor Castle on Wednesday.

In attendance was Chris Trott, the British ambassador to the Holy See. He said the upcoming match would not only be ecumenical, as King Charles is the head of the Anglican Church, but also international, a clash between two sovereign states.
