HS football player killed in Chester shooting, officials say – NBC10 Philadelphia
A school district in Chester, Pennsylvania, is mourning the loss of one of its own after a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday night.
According to police, officers from the Chester Police Department responded to the area of 24th Street and Crosby Street around 6:40 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, officers found a teenager, later identified as 17-year-old Zaheem Sabree, lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the left side of his head.
According to police, Sabree was taken to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Detective Michael Maher of the City of Chester Police Department at 610-447-8428 or Detective Sean Gallagher of the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division.
In a press release, the Chester Upland School District confirmed that Sabree was entering the twelfth grade and had been a dedicated member of the high school football prom since he was sophomore.
District officials wrote a statement that said, in part:
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this heartbreaking and difficult time.
Zaheem’s shocking passing yesterday is a great loss to our school community and impacts everyone from classmates to teachers who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication and spirit as a member of our High School football program are irreplaceable and he will be missed by his teammates and coaches who remember him not only as a player, but as a friend on and off the field.
Although schools are closed for the summer months, CUSD has established support services for staff and students since yesterday. These services will be available through Wednesday, July 3.
Support services are available at STEM Academy in Showalter, located at 1100 W. 10th Street, Chester, PA 19013. Additionally, anyone needing services next week is encouraged to contact the district's central administration office.”
