Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev hits racket against knee several times during Wimbledon loss

Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev entered Wimbledon as the sixth seed and was therefore one of the favorites to potentially win the first Grand Slam title of his career.

However, Rublev faced a tough challenge from Argentine Francisco Comesana, and unfortunately the Russian star was defeated in four sets. Comesana won the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (5). He had 21 aces in the win, compared to Rublev's two.

To say that Rublev was hard on himself is an understatement.

Rublev was seen hitting his racket on his knee several times after one mistake in the second set, and his frustrations seemed to carry over into the rest of the match.

He later explained that he had hit his racket on his knee because of an All-England Club rule against damaging the grass on Wimbledon tennis courts.

“I wouldn't do it if I could hit the racket on the ground,” he told reporters after the match, via The tennis letter. “Because we weren't allowed to hit the grass.. so I don't know.. at that point I couldn't handle it anymore. I had to let my emotions out. But thank you. Everything is fine.”

TENNIS STAR ARYNA SABALENKA WITHDRAWS FROM WIMBLEDON

Rublev reached the quarterfinals of each of the Grand Slam tournaments, including Wimbledon last year. He was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in January and the US Open the last two years.

He was knocked out in the third round of Roland Garros the last two times, after reaching the quarterfinals in 2022.

Rublev will now have to refocus on the US Open later this summer.
