Hundreds of children participate in the summer sports program of 2nd mayor Cabaron
CEBU, Philippines — About 600 children have completed the first phase of their training in six sports under the 2nd Mayor Inocentes Cabaron Summer Athletic Enhancement Program in Moalboal City, south of Cebu.
Now in its second year, this large-scale program offers free training in basketball, volleyball, dance, tennis, table tennis, badminton and chess.
The aim is to encourage children from Moalboal to take up sports and further improve their athletic skills.
Mayor Cabaron this year signed former University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancer Jaysar Esperat for basketball and former Philippine national team member Dave Cabaron for volleyball.
The other coaches are Seth Rabuya for tennis, Odillon Badilles for chess, Filjun Benlot for table tennis, Arvin Flores for dance and Hipolito Gocotano for badminton.
The program ends on July 15.
Sports are the best way to encourage our children to stay active. By giving them free training, we also hope to discover the next generation of players who can represent us in DepEd competitions, said Mayor Cabaron, an avid sportsman who plays tennis regularly.
Mayor Cabaron hopes that some players will get the chance to earn an athletic scholarship.
A sports scholarship is a huge help to the athletes' families, so I encourage them, if they get a chance, to take it, because not everyone gets a chance like that, Cabaron said.
