Hockey players taking advantage of the winter weather to get some “on ice” experience! There is no ice rink on the islands, so opportunities like this are not to be missed!

The extremely low temperatures in the Falkland Islands have given hockey players and fans the chance to practice on frozen ponds, which is a positive side of the climate situation. However, the Water Division of the Department of Public Works has also advised the public about water usage, which is “quite high at the moment”.

PWD urges the public to check garden hoses that may have burst due to the freezing weather. And if possible, check any vacant homes you care for while the residents are on vacation.

The good news is that hockey has become a national sport in the Falklands and is also played in international competitions in Chile, Central America and even the United States.

On the islands, the Falklands Hockey Association runs the Inline and Dek hockey leagues in Stanley. The national coach and founder is former professional ice hockey player Grant Budd, who set up an indoor hockey club in 2006 focusing on Dek hockey. This continued to grow for a number of years and with the introduction of inline hockey in 2015 interest in the sport exploded, with junior teams being particularly popular. It is now the most popular sport in the Falklands with over 130 players in the 2019 season across 5 different leagues.

Inline Hockey in the Falkland Islands is played with rules adapted from ice hockey rather than the typical inline rules. This suits the format of play which takes place in a gymnasium with wooden floors and is played in a 3-on-3 type of game. Based on ice hockey it also prepares players for international tournaments where the club normally plays on ice.

The local inline leagues range from the very youngest Peewees through Junior, Rookie and finally Elite (the highest level of the Youth leagues) and the Senior League. All disciplines are mixed gender and vary in age to some extent based on ability, skill and physical ability which are more important than age alone in the youth leagues. Full protective gear is required for all players, which is the same as ice hockey gear.

In recent budgets, the Falkland Islands Government and the National Sports Council have agreed to strengthen the Falkland Islands' sport and international reputation. One of the goals is to build an artificial ice rink, as Falkland teams play ice hockey abroad.
