New Zealand tennis star Lulu Sun is eager for Wimbledon second round

Lulu Sun makes her mark on the green Wimbledon courts as she reaches the second round of the tournament for the first time in her career.

Sun entered the tournament as a qualifier and defeated world number eight Qinwen Zheng of China to reach the second round.

She seemed completely at home on the hallowed turf during her 4-6 6-2 6-4 victory.

Sun told Breakfast this morning that her first round was on the biggest court she had ever played on, but she didn't let it get her down.

“At first I found it a bit overwhelming being surrounded by so many people and playing against such a top player, but as the match progressed I got used to it and started to get into my own game,” said Sun.

“Wimbledon is a beautiful place, it has a lot of history and culture. I feel super honoured to be playing in such a prestigious competition.”

Now that Sun has won the first round, it is likely that she will enter the top 100 in the women's singles rankings.

“It would be a huge achievement for Tennis New Zealand and a place in the top 100 is important for future generations to keep working and dreaming.”

Sun will play her second round match tonight against another qualifier, Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtsewa.

The 23-year-old is the first New Zealand woman to qualify for the second round of a Grand Slam main draw since Marina Erakovic in 2016.

Sun, born in Te Anau, grew up in Switzerland and is keenly aware of the country's long and storied association with Wimbledon.

It's super cool to have a player like [Roger Federer] at a tournament like this historically. It's nice to be able to play at the same tournament as him.

Sun has also been nominated to represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games, alongside compatriot Erin Routliffe.

“The Olympics are bigger than normal tournaments for a tennis player because you are representing your country and playing for something bigger than yourself.

“To be able to play with Erin, who has gained a lot of experience over the years, is a really cool achievement.”

Routliffe is also competing in Wimbledon, but in doubles. She will play her first round match later tonight with partner Gabriela Dabrowski.
