Cricket Australia chief reiterates country's position not to play bilateral cricket matches against Afghanistan until progress is made | Cricket News
Cricket Australia has pulled out of a bilateral match against Afghanistan due to the Taliban government's stance on the rights of women cricketers in the country. Australian Cricket CEO Nick Hockley reiterated that this will be Australia's position going forward.
“We maintain a close relationship and regular dialogue with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and want to see cricket flourish globally for both men and women,” Hockley said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo
“We are hopeful for some progress and will continue to engage and liaise with the Afghanistan Cricket Board with the aim of resuming bilateral cricket against Afghanistan at some point in the future,” he added.
Australia has denied playing the Afghan men's national team in a bilateral series since the Taliban regime took over the country in 2021, denying women the right to education and sport.
However, Australia continues to compete against Afghanistan in ICC events, and in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, the latter defeated the former by 21 runs in the Super 8 round to qualify for the semi-finals. “They (Afghanistan) had a fantastic tournament with phenomenal players, and they played with a lot of passion and spirit,” Hockley said.
“Regarding our bilateral matches, we have consulted extensively with stakeholders, including the Australian government, and have decided to postpone our last few series with Afghanistan Cricket Board on human rights grounds,” the CEO is quoted as saying.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan, when asked about the problem in the past, responded: We can't do something that is not under control. We wish we could do something.
“If there was a solution, we would have been happy. But I don't know what the solution is. I don't know much about political matters and I don't even like it. If we are playing in a World Cup, why not play in a bilateral series?” Rashid said.
