Penn State football recruiting: LaVar Arrington Jr., son of Nittany Lions legend, pledges
Three-star linebacker LaVar Arrington Jrthe son of former Penn State linebacker Lavar Arrington, committed to the Nittany Lions on Thursday. The younger Arrington chose Penn State over fellow finalists Tennessee and UCLA, both of which received official visits in June.
Arrington Jr. is a Charter Oak High School kid in Covina, California, and is the 61st athlete in the class of 2025. He could play linebacker or edge rusher at the college level.
“They started coming to see me to see if I was okay,” Arrington Jr. told 247Sports. “Then they told me I had a full ride with them. But what really struck me was when they said they weren't offering me for the name, they were offering me for the way I play football. To quote James Franklin, 'If your last name wasn't Arrington, we'd still be offering you.'”
Arrington Jr.'s father and namesake was a star player at Penn State from 1997 to 1999. He was twice selected to the All-Big Ten first team, was named Co-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 1998 and was a unanimous All-American in 1999.
He also won the Butkus and Chuck Bednarik Awards and the Jack Lambert Trophy as one of the best defensive players in America. Arrington finished ninth on the 1999 Heisman Trophy list.
The New York Giants selected Arrington Sr. with the second overall pick in the 2000 NFL DraftHe was a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time second-team All-Pro.
