Recap: Colorado Avalanche Development Camp, Day Two

 


The Colorado Avalanche celebrated the United States' birthday by playing in Canada's most popular sport. Nevertheless, day two of development camp kicked off with a few new faces from just around the corner.

Denver Pioneer freshmen and Avalanche draftees Tory Pitner and Jake Fisher joined the fold after missing yesterday. Pitner, who was in the first fold, was fun to watch, showing good feet and transition skills. Fisher’s first appearance was in the second fold, where he looked slow with his skating but great with his wrist.

They joined Chase Bradley and Nikita Pirshchepov, who were two of the best surprises of camp. Both would eventually get busy with the goaltending after their own session, which saw Matt Davis' crimson and gold DU colors flash the Avalanche logo, and Jake Barczewski try to build on his one not-so-good outing as a member of the Colorado Eagles last year.

Everyone in the big group practice at the end of the day would be burned to the bone, thanks to the performances of Jared Bednar and his coaching staff. Their performances turned up the intensity and everyone was moving twice as fast as before.

In game-like situations to end the day in addition to shootout drills, Colby Ambrosio stood out in the forward group, scoring two beautiful shootout goals. Of course, it wouldn't be without Makar ending the shootout game, Taylor Makar, that is.

At the end of the day, two names stood out as strong performers: Chad Hillebrand. He played his college career at Western Michigan and is at camp by invitation. He played two games with the Eagles at an ATO and has an AHL contract to start next season.

He has good puck handling ability and speed to show for it. He's never had much scoring ability but he could be a solid bottom-six forward in Loveland and will be interesting to watch.

There’s one more day of development camp left, with a lighter session in the morning. They’ll all unleash their energy and effort on the ice on Friday night with a scrimmage starting at 4:00 PM MT. We’ll be there to cover this last bit of hockey action before the dog days of summer really begin!
