Sumit Nagal on entry list for men's singles tennis at Paris 2024 Olympic Games
India's Sumit Nagal is on the entry list for the men's singles Paris 2024 Olympic Games released on Thursday by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
This will be Nagal's second appearance at the Olympic Games, having also appeared at Tokyo 2020. In the opening round, he defeated Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, but in the second round he lost to Daniil Medvedev.
The men's and women's singles at Paris 2024 will each feature 64 players. The top 56 eligible men's singles players, according to the ATP rankings released on June 10, were given quotas for their countries. However, each country could receive a maximum of four quotas.
Although Sumit Nagal was ranked 77th, a personal best for him, when the qualifying period ended, he made the cut-off because there were more than four players from multiple countries ahead of him. Several withdrawals also helped his case.
Nagal was ranked 138th in January but has been in exceptional form since then. Indian tennis player reached the top 100 for the first time after winning the Chennai Open earlier this year.
Nagal was ranked 95th in the tennis singles rankings just a week before the end of the qualifying period. He rose a whopping 18 places after his decisive victory in the ATP Challenger title at the Heilbronn Neckarcup in Germany, which saw him qualify for the Paris 2024 competition.
Nagal will be part of the Indian Olympic tennis team along with Rohan Bopanna, who will play with N Sriram Balaji in the men's doubles tournament in Paris 2024.
Bopanna was ranked fourth in the men's doubles world rankings when the qualifying period ended and made the cut with ease.
Each doubles event at the Paris Olympics will feature 32 teams, with a maximum of two per country. The first to qualify will be the top 10 players in the doubles rankings, as long as they have an available partner in the top 300 of the doubles rankings.
Bopanna therefore chose Balaji, who was ranked 67th. The entries of Bopanna and Balaji were confirmed by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) on 19 June.
Both Bopanna and Balaji are currently competing at the 2024 Wimbledon Grand Slam event in London. Bopanna is partnered with Australian Matthew Ebden, while Balaji is partnered with Britain's Luke Johnson.
Bopanna and Balaji will then travel to Hamburg and Umaag to compete in the ATP 500 events, after which they will travel to Paris.
Nagal also played at Wimbledon, but was eliminated in the opening round in both the singles and doubles.
