'No Rebuilding!' College Football Analyst Makes Bold Claim About Texas A&M Aggies
Like the Texas A&M Aggies As they prepare for their first season under Mike Elko after ousting Jimbo Fisher from College Station, expectations for their performance are still unclear.
On one hand, the team could legitimately underperform. They’re coming off a six-year run with a coach who completely failed in his last two seasons with the team and now face a rocky road of readjusting and finding momentum. On the other hand, they could find a stride and go above and beyond in Year 1 with Elko.
If they do, the question is how sustainable that success can be. Elko and the Aggies might get lucky, but they’ll be sidelined again. They could also use the early success to build a winning product, but that remains to be seen.
One analyst, however, sees the former as tangible.
You're probably going to laugh at my expectations for Texas A&M, because they're higher than most, Greg McElroy said. I look at their roster and I look at the structure, the way Mike Elko has been able to organize Duke and create problems for the opponent over the last few years. I don't think this is going to be a rebuild.
“I think this is a situation where once he comes in, he's going to be in a pretty good situation.
With Conner Weigman at the helm and a strong core of receivers backing him up, the Aggies should have a strong offense next season. On defense, a new coordinator and plenty of returning weapons give the Aggies a high ceiling if they can find a sense of unity right away.
That, combined with a broader group of College Football Playoff teams, could mean Texas A&M could immediately compete to prove itself. Them, and Elko.
“If you look at their schedule, it's a lot more manageable than you might think,” McElroy added. “An incredible season would be 10-2. Flirt with an at-large playoff spot. I think that's an incredible year for Texas A&M and I think it's possible.”
Playing directly under Elko is still a big “if.” But it's not impossible, especially with the resources the Aggies boast and what the coach has been able to do in his short time at Duke. It's just a matter of whether they use them to their full potential.
That can make all the difference.
