'Nigeria needs a table tennis league' – International champion Offiong Edem appeals
Offiong Edem, a revered international tennis champion, has called on the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) to establish a national league for all table tennis clubs in the country.
Speaking at a press conference on the upcoming fourth edition of the table tennis tournament for youth aged 9 to 17, Edem stressed the need for a structured competition, similar to the Nigeria Football Federation, to foster a competitive atmosphere and raise awareness of the sport.
Reflecting on her club Canaan Queens of Calabars’ journey to the final of the African Club Championship in Benghazi, Libya, Edem expressed mixed feelings about their defeat to Egypt’s Petrojet Tennis Club. Despite losing in the final, she highlighted their impressive journey, which saw them beat top clubs across Africa to reach the summit of the tournament.
Edem highlighted the disparity between Nigeria’s tennis clubs and Egypt’s organised league system, and stressed the need for a national tennis league to nurture talent and provide exposure to players who struggle with the costs of international competition. She lamented the financial barriers faced by many aspiring players, citing the high cost of around $3,000 to compete in international tournaments, which significantly impacts their ability to improve their world rankings and compete consistently.
What we have in Nigeria is tennis clubs. We need to have a league. We have a lot of aspiring players who can't afford to travel abroad to compete.
The creation of a national tennis competition, as we know it from the world of football, will significantly strengthen tennis competitions in the country and give individual players more exposure.

Looking ahead to her fifth appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Edem appeared eager and ready, noting that she would have a training camp in Germany before heading to Paris. She expected a stronger performance compared to previous Olympic Games, and emphasized the rigorous preparations she and her fellow athletes had undertaken in their quest for Olympic success.
Offiong said: I feel overwhelmed that I qualified for the fifth time.
My participation in the 2024 Olympics will be much better. Many colleagues have left for their different training camps abroad. I will soon leave for Germany for two weeks before flying to Paris for the Olympics.
