Captain Harmanpreet Singh realises that the Indian men's hockey team is heading to the Paris Olympics with high expectations and has promised to return from the French capital with great success. They want to celebrate this success with passionate fans, just like the victorious cricket team.
Eight-time champions India ended a 41-year medal drought in Tokyo by winning a bronze medal.
“When we won a medal in Tokyo, it was like a tonic for hockey in India. This time our responsibility has increased and everyone knows how much love and respect we have got after that medal,” Harmanpreet told PTI Bhasha.
“I will just say that you (compatriots) have been there from the first day and we have also done our best. This time too, we will give 100 percent from the first to the last match. Keep believing in us, we will not let you down.”
Like every other Indian, Harmanpreet was very proud when India finally managed to win a T20 World Cup title after 17 years.
The Indian cricket team was given an unprecedented welcome on its return to the country. A grand victory parade was organised followed by a congratulatory ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.
And now Harmanpreet wants to give his countrymen a similar reason to celebrate after their return from Paris.
“As a player, there is nothing bigger than representing your country in a big tournament like the World Cup and winning the trophy. The whole country dances with the cricketers. It is a matter of greater pride that you have brought joy to everyone's faces,” he said.
“We also want to live these moments with our countrymen by winning gold in Paris. There can be no greater pride for me than this,” added Harmanpreet, who is preparing for his third Olympic appearance.
The hockey team captain, who scored 188 goals in 219 matches for India, is a great admirer of Rohit Sharma.
“After losing the ODI World Cup final last year, he (Rohit) won the T20 World Cup, which is a big thing. Rohit has also had a long journey and has seen a lot of ups and downs. The entire country is proud of him,” he said.
Harmanpreet, who will be India's captain for the first time at the Olympics, is always calm and composed on the field, qualities that are necessary for a leader.
“As a captain you have a lot of responsibility and only if you stay calm on the pitch can you help others. I also try to stay cool during matches and training and motivate the players to give the best of themselves,” he said.
India did not play their best match in the FIH Pro League and Harmanpreet highlighted the areas the team still needs to work on before the Paris Games.
“In the Pro League, our focus was on analyzing our opponents and not on revealing everything. All drag flickers got a chance. It was a good performance, but we could have done better,” he said.
“We have the best rusher and goalie for PC defense, but still drag-flick is getting harder every day. We worked hard on this, we analyze our rivals, who their first rusher is, what their technique is and how we can add variety.”
India are in a tough group for the Olympics, along with Australia, Belgium, Argentina, New Zealand and Ireland, but Harmanpreet is not feeling the pressure.
“Whatever the group of the Olympic Games, every team and every game is important. The first game is against New Zealand and now the focus is on them. We play to our strength.
