Gagan Narang appointed Chief of Mission, PV Sindhu co-flagbearer
Olympic medal winner Gagan Narang replaced boxing legend Mary Kom as the Head of Mission from India Paris 2024 Olympic Games contingent, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced on Monday.
Gagan Narang is a bronze medallist in the men's 10m air rifle event at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Mary Kom, also a bronze medallist in women's boxing at the London 2012 Games, had earlier stepped down as Chef-de-Mission due to personal reasons.
I was looking for an Olympic medallist to lead our contingent and my young colleague is a suitable replacement for Mary Kom, said IOA President PT Usha.
Mary Kom was originally announced by the IOA in March as India's Chef-de-Mission for the Paris Olympics, while Narang was tasked with leading the Indian shooting team.
When it comes to a national contingent participating in an international multidisciplinary event, the Chef-de-Mission is the main administrative function.
Chefs-de-Missions are responsible for looking after the athletes and their well-being. They are also the point of contact for the various organising committees and the sports members of the contingent.
Two-time Olympic medalist badminton ace P. V. Sindhu and Sharath Kamal, a 13-time Commonwealth Games medallist and table tennis veteran, will be the flag bearers for India at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics in 2024.
I am also pleased to report that India's only woman to have won two Olympic medals, PV Sindhu, was the flag bearer alongside table tennis player Sharath Kamal at the opening ceremony, Usha added.
In a sign of gender equality, the 2024 Paris Olympics will be the second consecutive Summer Games where India will have two flag bearers. At Tokyo 2020, India's flag bearers were Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh.
The flag bearer at the Olympic Games is a symbolic leader, who is the first person to lead a delegation from a country in the grand opening ceremony parade. The person proudly displays the country's flag during the parade.
The 2024 Paris Olympic Games will begin on July 26 and end on August 11.
