Vic Seixas, charismatic American tennis star who won Wimbledon in coronation year obituary
In 1951, now the American No. 1, he reached the final of the U.S. National Championships, but lost to Australian Frank Sedgman. The following year he was knocked out in the fourth round by Rosewall, and months later he lost the deciding match to Ken McGregor in the Davis Cup final, while Australia retained the trophy.
Undeterred, Seixas continued to train, his muscular body and powerful legs giving him the strength and stamina to fight through exciting matches against talented opponents.
He was a classic serve-volley expert: tall and very fast around the court with a great reach, recalls John Barrett, the dean of British tennis, who befriended the more experienced Seixas in the 1950s. In those days, with wooden rackets, we couldn’t hit huge drives from the back of the court and he used a topspin forehand and a slices backhand safe, solid groundstrokes but nothing spectacular. He came into his own at the net. He was a very handsome man but incredibly modest and friendly; a nice player and a nice guy.
1953 was Seixass's annus mirabilis and he reached the final of the French Open, before losing again to the 18-year-old Rosewall. At Wimbledon, where he was seeded second, he narrowly survived the explosive Lew Hoad and in the semi-finals to another hard-hitting Australian, Mervyn Rose.
