Carlson's record century leads Glamorgan to historic victory over Somerset
Kiran Carlson's magnificent century brought Glamorgan's 2024 Vitality Blast campaign to a record-breaking end with a convincing 120-run win over Somerset.
The Glamorgan captain scored 135 from just 64 balls after winning the toss and opting to bat, giving the hosts their highest total of the 2024 Blast and their best of the competition with 243 for four, before Somerset were sent to 123 all out.
Marnus Labuschagne brought in the Somerset tail with the final seven wickets, for just 35 runs, thanks to a 15-ball display. The Australian took five for 11 – the best ever for the Welsh county in the competition – including a triple-wicket maiden.
Glamorgan's victory was for naught as they finished the Blast in sixth place in the South Group, while Somerset have qualified for the quarter-finals, but they are still waiting for the result of Sussex to find out who their opponent will be.
Glamorgan's record-breaking innings began without any sense of abnormality with Craig Overton's first over of the match yielding seven runs. However, 16 and 15 from the second and fifth overs respectively helped Glamorgan to 66 without loss from the first six overs.
Carlson's flashy start in particular did not seem to be over yet, because after 28 innings he made his fifty points.
England international Jack Leach showed his experience by conceding just four singles in the eighth over, but the Glamorgan captain's devastating opening duo of 169 runs and Will Smale showed no sign of changing Somerset's fortunes.
Carlson and Smale then went on to achieve their personal milestones in successive overs. Carlson's first-ever century in T20 cricket was followed by Smale's first-ever half-century in professional cricket, the latter including a disaster for six from Somerset seamer Riley Merideth, despite two fielders being placed behind the wicketkeeper on the boundary.
The partnership eventually ended when Smale played the ball out to Sean Dickson at deep midwicket off Ben Green.
Colin Ingram's partnership of 44 with the centurion saw the run rate soar towards the highest total in Glamorgan's blast history.
Carlson's knock came to an end in the 18th centurye about when he played Meredeth against Tom Abell at mid-off, making it the highest score by an individual in a T20 for Glamorgan.
It became 234 for three when Chris Cooke's 10-ball cameo of 16 was ended by an impressive boundary catch by a leaping Overton after a Green challenge.
Jake Ball ended his tenure with the best of economical figures (nil for 38) with a couple of clever right-handed wide yorkers that restricted the last over to nine; Ingram ran out the last ball for 21.
Somerset's improbable chase began strongly with 25 from Douthwaite in the second over. 36 for no loss in two overs quickly became 40 for two just five balls later, with Timm van der Gugten taking the wickets of Tom Banton and Tom Kohler-Cadmore in successive deliveries.
Kellaway took his first Blast wicket when George Thomas missed the 20-year-old off-spinner and covered for 16 yards. The total equalled Glamorgan's 66 runs from the powerplay.
The runs kept rolling in for the West Countrymen but it didn’t stop the steady wickets. Dickson (12) and Abell (29) were both given starts before the introduction of Marnus Labuschagne into the bowling attack in his final Glamorgan match of 2024 sparked a collapse as the Welsh county cruised to a 120-run victory – their biggest ever margin of victory in the competition.
